As "Evergreene" As Ever

When you read the novels written by Graham Greene, probably one of the most prolific writers of the 20th Century, the eyecatcher is the sentences that come up now and then that make you think. Agree or disagree with these absolute gems but its definitely one of the many reasons that makes me return to reading Greene again and again.

Here are a few quotes from two of his best works, "Heart of the Matter" and "The Power and the Glory".

"It is one of the strange discoveries a man can make that life, however you lead it, contains moments of exhilaration;there are always comparisons that can be made with worse times: even in danger and misery the pendulum swings"

"When you visualized a man or woman carefully, you could always begin to feel pity - that was a quality God's image carried with it. Hate was just a failure of imagination"

"The truth has never been of any real value to any human being—it is a symbol for mathematicians and philosophers to pursue. In human relations kindness and lies are worth a thousand truths"

"The more evil you saw and heard around you, the greater glory lay around the death. It was too easy to die for what was good or beautiful, for home, or children, or a civilization - it needed a God to die for the half-hearted and the corrupt."

"Point me out the happy man and I will point you out either egotism, selfishness, evil - or else an absolute ignorance"
