Sania - A Star in the Making
"Remember the name,We are going to hear a lot more about her.'' These were the words uttered by commentator John Barrett of BBC after Sania Mirza's match yesterday at Wimbledon. Though Sania lost, I think she made the tennis fans take notice of her talent.
I was watching Sania for the first time and was truly impressed. I think she has the potential to be among the best. She has incredible ground strokes, especially on the forehand side. She was unfazed by the occasion yesterday and showed amazing temperament for an 18 year old. As Vijay Amritraj commented, if she can improve her serve and volleying skills by some amount, she will be a force to reckon with. It's still early days for her and I definitely feel she can be a top-10 player. I do hope that over exposure to the print and electronic media does not damage her promising career.
She created history of sorts yesterday. Sania became the first Indian woman to play a singles match at Centre Court and also the first Indian (among both men and women) in two decades to play a singles match at the same court.

Ahem..Kindly stop hyping up the girl..You feel sad coz she's now concetrating more on doing crappy ads than improving her pathetic whimpy serve !! Media has a habit of killing talent..Look what happened to Dada ?? Pray she doesn't go the same way.
You are right, there was too much hype around her. Till I saw her play I thought she was all hype, but no, she does have some talent. As you said, I hope media doesn't hamper her career.
I think Sania is a victim of media hype. The girl has guts and the determination to succeed but if the media does not release its obsession with her, then she too will join the growing list of sports persons in India whose 'performances' are seen more in ads than on the sports fieled

I was very impressed by Ms. Mirza too. I've been meaning to write a post about the match, but havent got around to it. Maybe tomorrow.

ahem..i watched the dubai open when she lost the match. I agree she has a special forehand but she doesnt have a serve to speak of and her movements in the court are a bit sluggish
dont blame the media about the hype. managing to deal with the hype is one integral part of being a sports person today. Not just in india anywhere. And as far as i can see, she does enjoy the attention too.
Is she really good to be in the top 10? i am not sure. she might only be 18 but women's tennis today seem to be filled with sweet sixteen's burning out by the time they are in the low 20's.

i played tennis too in her home town and i know so many girls who defeated her in u12 u14 & u16, if she was talented she wouldnt have lost, if u get a GVK backing u then u dont need talent
